Navigation Exercise 5

Route

Redcliffe – Dunwich Aerodrome – Jacobs Well VOR – Gold Coast Airport – Archerfield – Redcliffe
Full stop landings are planned for at underlined locations
Dunwich Aerodrome may be unsuitable for landing. Plan to conduct a Precautionary overfly

Reminder

PPL Exam and CASA Safety Behaviours Workbook MUST be completed by this Nav-Ex

Welcome to Navigation Exercise 5: Terminal area navigation, island flying, Class-C airports and ground-based Navaid utilisation.

In this sequence you’ll depart Redcliffe and track southbound via the OCTA island route. You’ll inspect Dunwich aerodrome, learn to track inbound and outbound on navaids and land at Gold Coast International Airport before returning home via Archerfield.

You’ll spend some time in the RAC Simulator during the Nav 5 Brief, learning how to utilise ground based Navaids and the instruments in your aircraft.

The radio phraseology and procedures for this Nav-Ex are more challenging you will have faced thus far, so ensure you take the time to read and understand the procedures outlined in the “Nav 5 Sample Radio Calls” sheet.

Booking Requirements

This sequence will require the following bookings:

  • 4 hour briefing slot, 1 hour of which is in the synthetic trainer
  • 1pm – 5pm slot with Instructor
  • 1pm – 5pm slot with aircraft

Instructor requirement: Grade 3 or higher

Your briefing should be conducted at least a few days before the flight component to allow yourself time to practice the techniques learned.

CASA Guidelines for using GPS

Completion Checklist

Along with your prepped Flight Plan, bring the following calculations (completed) to your nav day:
Your Instructor will check them over

– End of daylight calculation for YRED, based on the date of the flight
– Weight and Balance calculation for your aircraft. (yourself, instructor, full fuel, 15kg baggage)
– Declared Density calculation for YDUN (see Instructor or the CASA Visual Flight Guide for info)
– Take-off and Landing Distance required for YDUN using Declared Density information

Preparation

Before your Briefing:

Your briefing will take approx 4 hrs on a day prior to the Nav-Ex. PRIOR to this briefing you should:

  • Mark all the FPT’s on ALL appropriate charts with 10nm markers.
  • Complete the Flight Plan as you are able (i.e position, TAS, tracks, distances)  i.e. what you can without the weather
  • Attempt to complete the Domestic Flight Notification Form (as far as you are able) i.e. what you can without the weather
  • Read & review the GOLDCOAST procedures in the ERSA
  • find aerodrome information for DUNWICH (internet and/or phonecall to aerodrome operator)
  • Read & review CAAP 92-1 (revision)
  • Read & review overfly, arrival & departure procedures for YBCG & YBAF
  • Read & review the sample radio calls
  • Read & review AIP GEN 3.4 RADIO TELEPHONY PROCEDURES
  • Read & review AIP GEN 3.4 RADIO PHRASEOLOGIES
  • Read & Review ‘operations in controlled airspace’ AIP ENR 1.1 page 1 to 44 (skip past the irrelevant details which clearly don’t relate to your type of operations e.g. IFR procedures)
  • Read & Review ‘operations in controlled airspace’ AIP ENR 1.6 page 1 to 10 (skip past the irrelevant details which clearly don’t relate to your type of operations e.g. IFR procedures)
  • Do we need life jackets for the over-water portion of our flight? read CAO 20.11, section 5

Using Navigation Aids:

In your PPL FLIGHT TEST you will be expected to know how to use all the navigation aids available to you in the aircraft.  These aids may then be ‘failed’ by your testing officer to assess your DR skill, but you need to know how to use them fundamentally.  You should know how to:

  • HOME on an NDB & VOR (tune, identify and test and NDB & VOR and track towards the station)
  • FLY A radial on the VOR
  • Use the VOR to determine a position line from the VOR
  • Use the GPS to determine position
  • Use the GPS to track to a waypoint (using the DIRECT-TO function)

Busy, Busy Brisbane:

Brisbane CTR, being a busy international and domestic airport, usually will not allow your flight to enter it’s controlled airspace during transit to the Gold Coast. For this reason, we fly either the island-route or the Archerfield route to the Gold-Coast. However, be aware that it is possible to transit overhead Brisbane Airport itself.

Low-Level Inspection Required:

On the day you visit Dunwich you will be required to perform a low-level inspection of the field. Expect to complete 500ft AGL circuits with a 100ft overfly to scatter any animals near the strip. The location may not be in a serviceable condition for landing, so ensure you have revised your diversion procedure. Be sure to check if you need prior permission to land. You may have to call ahead.

Final Thoughts:

  • Make a ‘cheat-sheet’ to assist you in succeeding with the required radio phraseology through Archerfield and Gold Coast, but be prepared to improvise when ATC instructions change from your plan
  • YDUN to YBCG is a Dual leg where your Instructor will provide assistance as required
  • Along with learning the NDB and VOR, you’ll also learn about the KLN-94 GPS and KAP140 Autopilot, so read up before hand

Instructor’s Tips

  • The JCW to YBCG leg is typically the one that students find the most challenging, but remember it’s a dual exercise and your Instructor will offer assistance as required
  • Make sure you take time to read about the VOR and NDB. You’ll need to utilise them to lighten your workload
  • Do you remember how to conduct a precautionary search and landing?
